The White Panda (Electronic DJ) formed when two boyhood friends discovered they had independently embarked on mashup careers in college. Chicago-based Procrast (Tom Evans) first blended Rick Astley snippets with 2 Live Crew grooves as a way to avoid productive activity in 2008, while DJ Griffi (Dan Griffith) embarked on the same mission, for a similar purpose, in Los Angeles. Their combined effort, The White Panda, launched in 2009 with a single that topped internet radio charts days later. They’ve since had 27 singles reach No. 1 on Hype Machine.
White Panda is a DJ known for remixing and releasing mashups. Until June of 2018, White Panda was a duo made up of boyhood friends who discovered that they had both independently embarked on mashup careers in college.
White Panda, originally a duo, began mixing songs and adapted to the "throwback-meets-modern" image. In 2014, White Panda released a mashup consisting of Disclosure's and Sam Smith's "Latch" and Mike Posner's "Cooler than Me," titled "Cooler than Latch.
" It was first included in White Panda's mix album Bearly Legal (2013) and was eventually released as a single. The duo released their album titled The Pawprint, in 2015. In May 2017, they released a remix of FRND's song "Be Happy," which consists of 'harmonic bass' and vocal chops.
A month later, they made a mashup of five songs that are "Blood on the Dance Floor," "Dangerous," "This Place Hotel," "Leave Me Alone," and "Is It Scary." It was given the title "Blood on the Dance Floor X Dangerous" and included on Michael Jackson's posthumous 2017 compilation album Scream, as a bonus track.
The mashup charted on Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart at 47th in the second week of February 2018. In September 2017, the duo remixed Ember Island's cover of the Rihanna single "Umbrella." On June 18, 2018, it was announced on their Facebook page that the White Panda had become a solo act.
